Hopeville reminds us that our actions still matter
Community , Empowerment , Family , Storytelling , Hopeville15 years after it was first released, the message of Hopeville is still resonating deeply with people. In just four weeks since we added it to our YouTube channel, the film has had over 11 000 viewers.
The story of Hopeville centers on Amos Manyoni, a recovering alcoholic who relocates to a struggling rural town to rebuild his life and reconnect with his estranged son, Themba. It first aired on SABC 15 years ago, but is now available on the Heartlines YouTube channel where this impactful story is still making waves all these years later.
Heartlines' Special Projects Manager, Jennifer Charlton says that “the high production values as well as some of the more quirky aspects of the production have contributed to its timeless appeal.” The star-studded cast includes Jody Abrahams, Desmond Dube, Leleti Khumalo, Fana Mokoena, Terry Pheto, Junior Singo and Mary Twala.
Directed by John Trengove, Hopeville has long been admired for its authentic portrayal of how hope, community and resilience can bring a community together. Even though it has been broadcast on SABC 2 and M-Net several times over the past 15 years, as well as being on ARTE TV in Europe and even appearing on Netflix, the film’s release on YouTube makes it easier than ever for viewers to access and experience its compelling story, regardless of where they are based.
When the series was first released, Heartlines ran a campaign called Do Good for Change, which aimed to mobilise people to take small positive actions towards improving their communities. As a result of this Charlton says that Heartlines was made aware of at least 300 new initiatives which people took in various parts of the country with the aim of improving their respective communities.
She adds that it is “part of a broader Heartlines agenda to encourage people to stand up for, and live out positive values.”
